NATO Fatigues
Interesting surplus items show up all the time that were not listed in the catalogue but were sold in stores because they were available in more limited quantities. Not so these NATO fatigues, sold in 1986 and found in what must have been somewhat large numbers to justify featuring them on the page. Complete with a label inside from the West German maker., it’s neat to see that even in 1986 when they were firmly entrenched in malls across America, BR was still digging up some surplus. Cold War spending sprees had their benefits.
From the catalogue: “Cold-weather fatigues were first worn by Western armies in Korea, and later by NATO troops on maneuvers in the North Atlantic. The West Germans made this batch from a brownish-green blend of wool flannel with a little nylon added for durability. Practical touches include bellows thigh pockets with outside sleeve for writing tools, flashlight, or knife; ribbon ties to secure kets. canteen, or ice ax; and suspender buttons. Exceedingly stylish, functional, and affordable wear for outdoorfolk.”
The photos below from a September 2020 auction, the second pair I’ve seen that still bear the tags.
I don’t know if this site is really maintained anymore but I have at least 2 pairs of these. Although I live in VA now and don’t get to wear them as often as I used to, they’re the best cold weather pants I’ve ever had.
